The question I seem to be asked the most is “how do I know.”
How do I know I need to change? How do I know that my depression needs professional help? How do I know I’m drinking too much.? How do I know when it’s time to realign my life.” How do I know when it’s time to let go?” How do I know when my life is out of control and unmanageable?” How do I know it time to surrender and turn it over to the God of my understanding.? HOW DO I KNOW????
One place to start is to think about things differently. Our ego likes to see things as “either – or.” Usually it means “I’m right and you’re wrong.” This is true of our collective identities too whether they reflect our families, religious beliefs, race, socioeconomic status, sexual identities, and the list goes on.
How do I know….sometimes the clues are subtle, sometimes they shout. Sometimes we hear them in the lyrics of a favorite song:
When you’re at the end of the road
And you lost all sense of control
And your thoughts have taken their toll
When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul
Your faith walks on broken glass
And the hangover doesn’t pass
Nothing’s ever built to last
You’re in ruins. lyrics from 21 Guns by Green Day.
OK…so what does thinking differently look like? Instead of looking at things as “either – or” look at things as “this and that.” The possibilities become endless and so what if life gets easier.
So what if nobody’s wrong? Does it really matter when we’re living our lives out loud? When we’re busy living our lives out loud then we’re too busy to live everyone else’s life. Come out of the shadows and live your life out loud with genuine clarity. Journey through the in-between places of your life. Journey from brokenness to wholeness. You’re not alone, we’re all in this together. It’s only your ego that says everything’s fine and don’t tell anyone it’s not.
